induction

Induction - First of all the little Smart is strangled when it leaves the factory.  This is for a variety of reasons, emissions, noise and economy.  The little 3-cylinder engine really benefits from a change in the standard set-up.
The improvements are seen in increase in torque and power and you will really notice the car is more responsive.  The gear changes are quicker as the turbo returns to full boost quicker after gear changes and it reduces the amount of gear changes as the engine has more torque.

Pipercross filter

  • Pipercross air filter upgrade – a free flow performance air filter that is a simple replacement for the standard air filter.  It has been shown to give around 4bhp on an otherwise std 55bhp Passion, it improves torque and helps speed up gear changes by allowing the turbo to get to full boost quicker.  It has a lifetime guarantee as do all the Pipercross filters we sell and can easily be cleaned and re used.
  • Pipercross hi Flow air filter  as above but for the Roadster or Highly tuned Smarts.  A higher flowing filter – it does require oiling after cleanin.
  • The VIPER induction kit uses a ‘velocity air force 'to direct cold air directly into the engine.   The cold air feed takes air from under the car straight into the VIPER 's 75mm diameter inlet, swirling it through a unique Pipercross velocity filter contained within a carbon fibre heat shield, and then into a ram pipe to increase it 's pressure before feeding it into the induction system.  The carbon fibre heat shield protects the air charge from under bonnet heat keeping it cool -and therefore denser -thus introducing more oxygen into the combustion mixture, giving increased power.   Tests have shown an increase of 10% in power with this unit and much quicker return to full boost after gear changes enhancing the performance of the Smart.
  • Pipercross Venom – This uses the same  ‘Velocity air force’ design as the Viper but using an ALLOY air box instead of the carbon fibre unit in the VIPER kit.
We are so happy with the performance of the Pipercross units we do not stock any other makes. Find out more here www.pipercross.net

"Testing on a modified Mk6 produced a measured increase in both power and torque after fitting the Pipercross Viper intake system - a huge plateau of max torque from 3300rpm to 4900rpm and additional 8 bhp "

Janspeed intercooler pipes

These were designed and built after we had trouble with silicone hoses inflating and compressing under boost.  This exacerbated turbo lag and caused some boost spike (the boost goes higher as the hose has to be inflated to full extension and then there is too much boost – hence the term boost spike - momentarily too much).

We asked Janspeed Motorsport to assist in designing and producing them.
We wanted stainless steel pipes – oversize if possible to smooth out the power delivery and incre
ase flow.

We achieved a bonus as they have been tested to give an addition 4% power as well as smoothing out the power delivery.

Some have questioned the fact that the stainless steel gets hot through heat soak – it does however it cools down equally quickly.  In testing using the X-Gauge it showed no increase in intake temperature during normal and hard running.
